Planting and Harvest Dates, Edmonton Gardens

Edmonton Garden Veggies, 2010

Vriends Organic Farm did Edmonton a service when they printed and gave away (that’s right, for free!) a calendar that included the following chart. Now known as August Organics, the Vriends have been farming organically in Edmonton for over 30 years (I’m not sure on the exact timeline. Anyone?). Visit their booth any Saturday at the Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market for the best seasonal organic vegetables around.

Please share your knowledge on the subject in the comments, and I'll add to the chart.

This is very useful, as I am growing my first veggie garden ever this year! Doing it all for the fist time is a bit like walking in the dark, so having this schedule specific to Edmonton will be as great resource. Thanks.

Thanks SherryGreens. Good luck with your garden.

Thanks for posting the Harvest dates! Planning my first garden and this will be posted on the fridge!

Are the planting dates a work in progress, or are they posted elsewhere?

Thank you again!

Andy,

The planting dates are the first ones (not highlighted) and the harvest dates are highlighted in green.

Conrad

Hi,

I was wondering how the planting dates work? Are these specific to Edmonton, as it would seem as though the ground is still frozen in both February and March.

Please advise.
Thank you.
Daniel Lowe

Daniel,

The Feb and Mar dates are the planting of seedlings indoors. April and May dates are outdoor plantings, but they always entail some risk because we can have snow/frost very late in Edmonton

Conrad

This calendar is just what i was looking for!! Thank you so much, it looks like I am late with the tomatoes loll I will be back for more :-)

Thank you so much. Planning my first garden (raised container beds) for this spring.

Even though frost and cold are a danger, last year I had spinach plants SNOWED upon for a couple days and they did fine. The peas were in the ground but had not yet come up and the leek transplanted into the garden (mid April) were in a trench that got covered by a haybale at night and during the late snow storm.

Some plants survive even the most surprising situations.

I am a bit confused about the dates given.

For example: "Beans" are the first 2 dates (May 25 and June 15) the first and last planting dates recommended for seeds?

Like "Broad Beans", why are there 3 planting dates (Apr 19, May 20 and Jun 8)??

Thanks

John,

Yes. You can plant on all of the dates mentioned to harvest in waves.

Thank you for this guide, I like to plant indoors as it stretches the growing season so much. I have only been in Edmonton for a few years so it really takes the guesswork out of what and when. Are you assuming there are grow lights indoors? I am also surprised to see root vegetables being started indoors, I had no idea they would transplant with any success. Any tips I should have for them?
